Geckos have become increasingly popular as exotic pets, with over 1,500 species of lizards worldwide. The Crested Gecko and Leopard Gecko are the most commonly kept as pets, although others are gaining recognition. Despite their diversity, most geckos remain small in size, with the Jaragua Sphaero being the smallest at just under an inch, while the extinct Delcourt's Giant Gecko of New Zealand measured over 23 inches in length. The New Caledonian Giant Gecko and Tokay Gecko are currently the largest species at 14 and 15 inches, respectively. The New Caledonian Giant Gecko has an unusual appearance due to loose skin, while the Tokay Gecko is known for its painful bite.
